Charcoal Dreams: Exploring Emotion Through Landscape & Portraiture.

Join us for a creative and expressive workshop where students will explore the boundaries between landscape and portraiture using charcoal. Inspired by the dramatic, dreamlike image where stormy seas blend seamlessly into a human face, students will create their own atmospheric piece that merges natural elements with human emotion.

In this session, we will:

• Examine how mood and story can be conveyed through contrast, shadow, and texture

• Practice charcoal techniques such as blending, layering, and expressive mark-making

• Explore how surrealism and symbolism can transform an image into something powerful and thought-provoking

Using the featured artwork as a starting point.

students will be encouraged to reimagine the concept in their own way—combining a human face or figure with an element from nature that reflects a personal emotion, story, or memory. This could be a stormy sky, a forest, a mountain range, or even a calm ocean. They’ll be supported in developing their ideas through sketching, discussion, and creative experimentation, ultimately producing a striking charcoal piece that is uniquely their own.

This is a perfect opportunity to delve into imaginative, emotive art-making. All levels welcome – come ready to explore, smudge, and create something hauntingly beautiful.

All materials provided. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit messy!
